The term “homeless dogs epidemic” refers to the growing number of abandoned and stray dogs that are entering animal shelters and rescue organizations, leading to overcrowding and a strain on resources. It is fueled by factors such as the pandemic pet adoption boom and economic challenges. Homeless dogs face risks such as exposure to the elements, lack of food and water, and increased vulnerability to disease and injury. In 2024 390,000 dogs were euthanized in U.S. shelters. Although in some states there has been a decreased, Georgia rates have tripled in the last four years and Alabama ranked 5th in the nation.
